Solving Trigons - Hints and Techniques

A set of triangular dominoes is put together in various shapes and sizes. There is a number on each side of the triangle and a central number which is the sum of the side numbers.

Where two sides meet, THE NUMBER IS THE SAME. To save writing the number twice a gap is left in the sides.

The problem is that you are only presented with the central number and you have to use logic to determine the side numbers.

The method of solving will depend upon the size of the set being used. With each set a table is provided showing all the possibilities according to the central number.Cross off the possible number combinations in the table as you go along.Use a pencil in case of mistakes.

This table is for a 000 - 444 set. The array is a section from such a puzzle.

The 0 can only be one thing, 000, so fill it in and cross it off the table. Now we have a 0 to a 5 which in the table has two options (014) and (023).

So we will leave that for a moment.

0 to 8 has only one possible solution so fill it in and cross it off. This leads to a 4 with only one possibility, fill it in and cross it off. Now 0 to 7 is (034) next to the 7 is a 3 so the 3 of the (034) must go there, fill it in and cross it off.

Now we have reached this stage:

The 5 above the 8 must be (014) but we don't know which way round the 0 or the 1 are but put a line through the 4 of (014) to tell you that you have located this number.

Now that you have isolated (014) then the 5 by the 0 must be (023). The 3 above it must be (012) because (003) is already used and the (111) cannot meet (023), so fill in (023) and (111) and then cross them off.

Now you can fill in the 7 and the 6 below it and then cross them off.

The two adjacent 2's are (002) and (011) and the number at which they meet must be a 0 so fill in these two and the 1(001) and 9(144) and then cross them off.

You should now start on the first puzzles which you will find are (000) - (333) sets.

When you are solving 000-333 Trigons, valuable number combinations are where a

0 is next to a 6; 1 is next to a 7 and a 2 is next to an 8.

Important Note - Whenever a Trigon has two unattached exposed sides, the numbers on those sides must be the same.

Never put in a number because it will fit.

Only put in a number because nothing else will fit.
